A new species of Homalocerus Schoenherr from the Atlantic coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil (Coleoptera, Belidae, Belinae), with notes on color pattern and on the sclerites of the internal sac Rev. Bras. entomol.
Vanin,Sergio A..
A new species of Homalocerus Schoenherr from the Atlantic coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil (Coleoptera, Belidae, Belinae), with notes on color pattern and on the sclerites of the internal sac. Homalocerus bimaculatus sp. nov. (type locality: Brazil, São Paulo) is described and illustrated, and comments on the sclerites of the internal sac of aedeagus and on color pattern are provided. The new species is compared to other similar species of the genus, being distinguished by having three clusters of carmine pubescence on pronotum and two lateral whitish oval spots located slightly before the middle of each elytron. Six species of Homalocerus, including the new one, are known from the State of São Paulo. The previously published identification key for...

Functionality of the plastron in adults of Neochetina eichhorniae Warner (Coleoptera, Curculionidae): aspects of the integument coating and submersion laboratory experiments Rev. Bras. entomol.
Sousa,Wesley Oliveira de; Rosado-Neto,Germano Henrique; Marques,Marinêz Isaac.
The plastron theory was tested in adults of Neochetina eichhorniae Warner, 1970, through the analysis of the structure that coats these insects' integument and also through submersion laboratorial experiments. The tegument processes were recognized in three types: agglutinated scales with large perforations, plumose scales of varied sizes and shapes, and hairs. The experiments were carried out on 264 adult individuals which were kept submerged at different time intervals (n = 11) and in two types of treatment, natural non-aerated water and previously boiled water, with four repetitions for each treatment. The tests showed a maximum mortality after 24 hours of immersion in the previously boiled water treatment. The survival of the adults was negative and...

Mauritinus seferi Bondar, 1960: bionomy, description of immature stages and redescription of adult (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Barbosa,Márcio Luís Leitão; Valente,Roberta de Melo.
Mature larvae of Mauritinus seferi Bondar, 1960 were collected in the mesocarp of murity palm (Mauritia flexuosa Linnaeus), in the State of Pará, Brazil. Larvae were reared to pupa and adults in the laboratory. Mature larva and pupa are described and adult redescribed. Adult and immature are illustrated for the first time. Observations about bionomy are included and discussed.

Susceptibility of different genotypes of rice to Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky 1885 attack (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) AGRIAMBI
Colares,Tatiane; Dionello,Rafael G.; Radunz,Lauri L..
ABSTRACT Rice (Oryza spp.), the most important cereal in the world, is grown and consumed in all continents. Brazil is among the top ten producing countries. Stored grains can be attacked by pests (rodents, insects, fungi and mites) that cause serious qualitative and quantitative losses. Because of these losses, one way to alleviate the problem caused by insects during rice storage is the use of resistant materials (grains). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate grains from nine different genotypes of rice, in order to identify the existence of materials less susceptible to the attack of Sitophilus zeamais, during 180 days of storage. The mean time of biological cycle (days), susceptibility index (IS) and the number of weevils emerged were evaluated....
